Budget Planning Update: Looking Ahead to the 2026–2027 School Year

The Naselle-Grays River Valley School District is currently developing the 2026–2027 budget using projected student enrollment, which directly affects state funding.

The district finished the 2025–2026 school year with 301 FTE students and is budgeting for 260 FTE students next year, a projected decline of 41 FTE.

Key factors include:

31 graduates from the Class of 2026
8 kindergarten students currently enrolled, with additional enrollments hoped for
34 students expressing interest in Running Start, resulting in a projected loss of approximately 17 FTE

This enrollment decline will reduce the funding available for district programs, staffing, and services. Our goal remains to make thoughtful, responsible decisions that support student success.

Please join us for the Board Budget Meeting on Tuesday, July 21, at 5:00 p.m. in the district library.

📚 **Tips for Summer Reading at Home** ☀️

Summer is a great time for students to continue building their reading skills while enjoying books that match their interests. Reading at home does not need to feel like an assignment. Even a few minutes each day can help students maintain their skills, build confidence, and develop a lasting reading habit.

Start with just 10 minutes a day, set a consistent reading time, and allow your child to choose books that interest them. Read aloud together, listen to audiobooks during car rides, and talk about what your child is reading.

Not every book will be a favorite, and that is okay. Encourage your child to try something different and keep building the habit.

Families are also encouraged to visit the Timberland Regional Library or the Wahkiakum County Library, participate in summer reading programs, and explore the free books, activities, and learning resources available to families.

Let’s make this summer a season of stories, growth, and time well spent together.

2026–27 Kindergarten and First-Grade Classroom Update

We currently have eight kindergarten students registered for the 2026–27 school year and expect approximately 24 first-grade students.

If enrollment remains about the same, the district plans to have:

One classroom with kindergarten students and some first-grade students
One classroom with the remaining first-grade students

This arrangement will help us create more balanced class sizes.

To be clear, first-grade students placed in the K/1 classroom will not be repeating kindergarten. They will remain first-grade students and will receive instruction based on first-grade standards and curriculum. Kindergarten students will receive kindergarten-level instruction.

Mrs. Bosch would teach the K/1 classroom and brings experience teaching both kindergarten and first grade. Mrs. Colquhoun will continue as the first-grade teacher.

Combination classrooms are common in small school districts. Enrollment may change over the summer, so we will provide more information in August when we have a clearer picture of actual student numbers.

Thank you for your understanding and support.

Please join us in recognizing and thanking four retiring Naselle teachers: Mr. Rob Dalton, Mrs. Rona Johnson, Mrs. Ditas Baker, and Mrs. Karen Nelson.

Their years of service, dedication, and commitment have made a lasting impact on countless students, families, colleagues, and our community. Each of them has helped shape our school district in meaningful ways, and their experience and presence will be greatly missed.

Thank you for the time, care, and energy you have given to Naselle and to generations of students. We wish each of you a happy, healthy, and well-deserved retirement!
